Creating Nanocarbon Application Technology

Carbon Nanotube Applications

About carbon nanotubes (CNTs) related to this project

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanomaterials made solely of carbon atoms. The highly oriented multi-walled CNT, for which this project promoted the development of synthesis process and applications, is a distinctive nanotube with aligned directions, diameters and lengths. Potential applications are wide-ranging including CNT-resin composite materials, electrodes for capacitors, fuel cells and solar cells, as well as high-performance materials created by combining various CNT fiber making technologies.

※The project is now closed as of October 2017.
Samples are provided by project participating companies and are all paid.

Applications of vertically aligned CNTs

Dispersion liquid sample for Transparent conductive film

Adding dispersing agents in a water or Organic solvent made dispersions of long CNTs possible. Dispersion can be kept for about 3 months.
Only a small amount of CNTs will prove effective so 1 liter of dispersion liquid with 0.1 wt% CNT concentration is supplied.

Electrically conductive fluorinated resin (PTFE) with ultra-low CNT content

Volume resistivity as high as 102 Ω-cm 〜103 Ω-cm was achieved by containing 0.05 wt% of CNTs in fluorinated resin. Leveraging the permeability of supercritical carbon dioxide, CNTs are deposited and immobilized on the super-surface layer of fluroresin particles (about few µm). This enables high electrical conductivity with a very small amount of CNTs.

Development of CNT yarn-making and twist-spinning technologies

1. Development of yarn diameter-control technology for twisted yarns of CNTs → Implementation of patterning technology → Manufacturing of ultrafine twisted CNT yarns (diameter: 1µm)
2. Development of yarn-making method that contributes to improved strength of twisted CNT yarns → Implementation of CNT coagulation technology → Tensile strength: 1.2 (GPa)
